New Homeowners Guide to HVAC Maintenance

July 28, 2025/in Articles/by William Hammer

Congratulations on the purchase of your first home. As a new homeowner you have a lot to learn, such as how to maintain your HVAC (heating and cooling) system. The HVAC system is one of the biggest and most important appliances in your home. It keeps your home feeling comfortable all year long and controls humidity levels to protect your home from mold.

But in order for your HVAC system to operate properly and efficiently, regular maintenance is required. You may be able to handle some basic maintenance yourself, but unless you’re an expert, you’ll need to find professional HVAC maintenance in Greensboro to keep your system in good shape.

DIY Air Conditioner Maintenance

The following are suggested “do it yourself” AC maintenance steps:

  • Change filters. The filters in your intake vents should be replaced every 6 months at the very least, and every 3 months for best results. If your home is a new construction or was recently renovated, change your filters every month for the first 6 months.
  • Clean vents. After removing dirty filters, clean the vents before putting new filters in. Clean the output vents as well.
  • Clear debris from outdoor unit. It is best to keep leaves and other debris away from your outdoor unit. Trim bushes and trees back away from the unit to allow plenty of airflow.
  • Check thermostat. Check your thermostat to ensure it is working properly. Look for any warning messages and make sure it is set to an ideal temperature. If your thermostat runs on batteries, consider replacing them.

AC Maintenance Best Left to the Professionals

Further maintenance is required on a yearly basis for your air conditioner, but these steps are best left to a professional HVAC company:

  • Clean condenser and evaporator coils
  • Clean drain lines for proper flow and clear clogs
  • Clear drain pans of any standing water to avoid overflows
  • Replace worn pulleys and belts
  • Inspect ducts for mold, dust, and debris
  • Observe humidity levels
  • Check refrigerant charge and for leaks
  • Test thermostats and controls to make sure temperatures and timer functions are correctly set
  • Check electrical system and connections
  • Check fan motor
  • Check blowers and blades for proper airflow
  • Lubricate motors bearings and moving parts
  • Inspect cabinet for leaks and check cabinet door for secure closure

DIY Heating System Maintenance

For heating system maintenance, you can handle the following:

  • Change filters. The intake vents for your heating system are most likely the same ones used by your heating system in the case of a forced air HVAC system. Continue to change your filters at least every 3 months during the cold weather season.
  • Clean vents. Clean the vents whenever you change filters.
  • Check thermostat. When you switch from AC to heat in the fall, check your thermostat to make sure it is working properly and that it is set to the desired temperature.
  • Clean indoor furnace unit. Wherever your furnace is located (typically either the attic or basement or a “utility closet”) clean dust and cobwebs from the outside and make sure all storage is kept away from the unit.

Professional Heating System Maintenance

The following heating system maintenance items are best left to a professional HVAC company:

  • Inspect ignition burner assembly
  • Examine heat exchanger or heating elements
  • Study flue system and ensure secure attachment to the furnace
  • Inspect for gas leaks with gas furnaces
  • Assess gas pressure
  • Check pulleys and belts
  • Clear drain lines and pans
  • Check electrical connections
  • Lubricate motors, bearings and other moving parts
  • Check thermostats and controls
  • Check fan and blower operations and adjust as needed
  • Inspect heat pump
  • Examine ductwork and vents

HVAC Replacement Can Save You Money

July 28, 2025/in Articles/by William Hammer

How old is your HVAC (heating and cooling) system? If it’s more than 10 years old, it may be time for HVAC replacement. But why invest money into replacing an appliance that isn’t broken? Because replacing your old HVAC system with a new one can actually save you money. Here’s how.

Efficiency

Advancements in technology have made new air conditioners and furnaces much more efficient than they were just 10 years ago. Every new model is more efficient than the last. By upgrading to a new HVAC system, you can save money every month on your energy bill. Your electricity bill will be lower in the summer and your gas bill will be lower in the winter. If you upgrade to a propane or gas furnace, you could save money on fuel prices.

Fewer Repairs

A new HVAC system will require fewer repairs than an older system. In fact, a brand new system shouldn’t need any repairs for many years after installation, just basic yearly maintenance. If your older HVAC system is prone to repairs, you know how expensive they can be, especially when they occur after hours or on the weekends when repair rates are higher and there are extra fees.

Avoid Unexpected System Failure

An older HVAC system is often like a ticking time bomb, ready to give out at any moment. All it takes is a heat wave and your air conditioner suddenly gives out, leaving you in a difficult spot. Your home can become dangerously hot in just a few hours without AC on a sweltering summer day. You need HVAC replacement fast, but a financial decision of this magnitude should be something you take your time with. You may find yourself accepting your first estimate without having time to compare estimates and find a better price. All of this hassle could have been avoided if you replaced your old system when you had the chance.

Take Advantage of Tax Incentives

Purchasing a new, energy efficient HVAC system can make you eligible for tax incentives and rebates. The key to qualifying for these is to get an Energy Star rated system or one with a high SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio). You can receive your rebate after HVAC installation or file it as a deduction on your tax return.

Upgrade to a Smart Thermostat

Another way to save energy with a new heating and cooling system is to get a smart thermostat as part of your HVAC installation. A smart thermostat is programmable so that you can preset temperatures for different times of the day. This way you won’t have to heat or cool your home as much when no one is there. You can also adjust the temperature for nighttime when you’re sleeping. Smart thermostats can be controlled from your smartphone or other mobile device in case you forget to set your thermostat while you’re away from home.

Berico Can Help You Save Money with HVAC Installation

If you’re thinking about upgrading your HVAC system, Berico can evaluate its current condition and provide you with an estimate. Berico installs a wide range of makes and models to suit all homes and budgets. Start saving money now with a new, efficient HVAC system.

The History of Central Air Conditioning

July 28, 2025/in Articles/by William Hammer

Central air conditioning has become standard in homes and commercial buildings in the US and other developed countries. But that wasn’t always the case. It wasn’t until the late 1960s that new homes were standardly equipped with central air in some areas.

As you sit in the cool comfort of your home or office on a hot summer day, consider how the modern central air conditioning system came about and be thankful for the innovative minds that brought the idea to life.

The First Cooling Machine

The concept of artificial cooling began with Dr. John Gorrie, a physician and inventor living in Florida. Dr. Gorrie theorized that cooling hospital rooms could aid in faster recovery for patients and help control contagious diseases. His cooling concept began by having ice shipped in from frozen natural bodies of water in other parts of the country. In order to combat the expense, Dr. Gorrie came up with a device for creating ice with a horse powered compressor, which was patented in 1851. His invention never made it to market due to the death of his financial backer, but the concept of modern refrigeration and air conditioning was born.

An Apparatus for Treating Air – The Air Conditioner

The first air conditioner, or an “apparatus for treating air” as it was then called, was invented by Willis Carrier in 1902. There was a need to control humidity for a publishing company whose magazine pages were constantly curling up and causing trouble for printing. The concept of heating water to create humidity (steam) was already a well-known concept, but the reverse process of cooling water to dehumidify air had not been explored as a useful procedure.

His first patent was an automatic system for controlling humidity that was used in textile mills. He formed Carrier Engineering Corporation that is now Carrier Global. The company still manufactures air conditioners and other home appliances.

Commercial Cooling Emerges

Air conditioning was first used in public buildings before it became a household appliance. In 1904 at the St. Louis World’s Fair, the Missouri State Building was cooled using mechanical refrigeration. Movie theaters were next in the 1920s during the silver screen era. The technology was still very rough, as temperatures varied greatly across the same room due to lack of efficiency and effective distribution of air. The details were fine tuned over the next few years as commercial cooling improved and engineers worked to bring air conditioning to the home.

Residential Air Conditioning Becomes Affordable

The first window unit air conditioner was invented by H.H. Schultz and J.Q. Sherman and marketed in 1932, but due to the high cost they were not widely used. Henry Galson engineered a more affordable version that was widely used in homes by 1947.

From the window unit evolved central air conditioning that became more prevalent through the 1960s and 1970s. The central air conditioner consisted of a single system that could create enough cool air to disperse throughout the home by way of ducts.

Evolution of AC Technology and Refrigerant

The key element of an air conditioner is a substance called refrigerant. Freon was the original refrigerant, but it was discovered to be hazardous to the environment. Other refrigerant options are in use in today’s air conditioners. Advancements in technology over the years have made central air conditioners more energy efficient and engineers consistently work to further reduce energy consumption for residential and commercial cooling.

What is a Mini Split HVAC System?

July 28, 2025/in Articles/by William Hammer

Like all technology, HVAC systems are constantly evolving. While it has been in existence since the 1950s, the ductless mini split HVAC system is recently gaining popularity. New models are more efficient than ever, even surpassing central air in energy savings.

What is a mini split AC system? Here’s an overview of this type of HVAC unit and how it works.

How the Mini Split System Works

There are many clues to the way a ductless mini split system works right in the name. The first word to consider is “ductless” because a mini split system does not require ductwork. Air does not originate in one location to be forced through a series of ducts in order to be distributed throughout your home like in a central air system. The next keyword is “split” which refers to the fact that there is a separate unit in each room of your home, and each is connected to a single outdoor unit. The word “mini” simply refers to the small size of each indoor unit.

The wall mounted indoor unit in each room contains an evaporator coil filled with refrigerant. The evaporator absorbs heat from the indoor air, cools it down, and the fan blows it back out into the room. The heat that is absorbed travels through the conduit to the outdoor unit containing the condenser where it is released. The heating portion is essentially the same process, but in reverse.

A mini split system works like a heat pump in that it transfers heat from the inside to the outside and vice versa. A heat pump uses less energy than most other HVAC systems because it maximizes the heat that is available, using it as efficiently as possible.

Benefits of the Mini Split AC System

There are many benefits to the mini split HVAC system, such as:

  • A mini split system is more efficient than a central air system for multiple reasons. One is the lack of ducts. Up to 30% of optimized air energy is lost through the ducts in a forced air system. Another way the mini split system is more efficient is the way heat is transferred, minimizing the amount of energy required to condition the air.
  • Custom climate per room. Each room in your home with a wall mounted unit can be set to the temperature that is desired for that room. This means that each individual can choose their own indoor climate. It also means that you can avoid heating or cooling rooms that are not being used, saving energy.
  • A ductless mini split AC system can be installed in any home and in any room. You don’t have to have existing ductwork or add any ductwork. It is ideal for added spaces, finished basements, and sunrooms.
  • Save money. The energy savings you get with a mini split system will save you money immediately and in the long run. You also save money on installation because you avoid paying for ducts to be installed throughout your room, which is a significant renovation.

HVAC FAQs

July 28, 2025/in Articles/by William Hammer

How often is HVAC repair necessary?

Heating and cooling experts recommend having your HVAC system serviced twice a year, once in the fall for your furnace and once in the spring for your air conditioner. You may have more success with scheduling if you aim for late summer and late winter when technicians are less busy.

Can you save money with HVAC replacement?

Replacing an old HVAC system with a new, energy efficient system can save you money in a variety of ways. Your energy bills will be lower, and you’ll spend less on repairs with a new system.

Do I need to replace my air conditioner if it uses R-22 refrigerant?

Refrigerant is the substance inside of your air conditioner that absorbs heat and creates cool air. Older systems used R-22 refrigerant, but it has been phased out of production. If your system uses R-22 refrigerant it would be a good idea to replace it since all HVAC contractors are now working on a limited and very expensive supply.

How often should you replace your HVAC filters?

At the very least you should replace the filters in your intake vents every 6 months. For better results replace them every 3 months. Filters prevent dirt, dust, and debris from getting into your HVAC system and reducing its efficiency.

What does SEER mean?

SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio, which is the measurement of how efficient an air conditioner is. A SEER of 14-16 is considered high efficiency and anything above that is even more efficient.

How does a heat pump work?

You may have heard that a heat pump is an efficient type of HVAC system. It works by transferring heat from one place to another. When it is cold outside, a heat pump pulls heat from the air, bringing it inside to heat your home. When it is warm outside, a heat pump gathers the heat from inside your home and transfers it outside. It is still a forced air system with vents that distribute air throughout your home.

Is duct cleaning necessary?

Air travels from your HVAC system throughout your home through the ducts. Over time dust and debris can get into the ducts and mold can form. It is good to have your ductwork cleaned yearly to keep your HVAC system clean and improve the air quality in your home.

Does your HVAC system control the air quality in your home?

A typical HVAC system with regular filters controls humidity and removes some particles from the air. But to make a noticeable improvement in your indoor air quality it helps to use high efficiency filters that are capable of removing more particles from the air. An air purification system is even more effective, killing pathogens and producing clean air.

What’s the ideal temperature to set your thermostat to?

If your goal is to save energy, the ideal temperature for your thermostat is 68 degrees Fahrenheit in the winter and 78 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer. Using fans and wearing warmer clothes can help these temperatures feel more comfortable.

What are the warning signs that my HVAC system needs to be replaced?

There are a few warning signs that indicate the need for HVAC replacement:

  • Frequent repairs.
  • Rising energy bills.
  • Excessive noise.
  • Tripping circuit breakers.
  • Uneven temperatures throughout your home.

If you notice any of the above, your HVAC system may be on its last legs. Consider having it inspected to determine if replacement is necessary.

Alamance Battleground State Historic Site

July 28, 2025/in Articles/by William Hammer

The Alamance Battleground State Historic Site at 5803 NC-62, Burlington, NC 27215 is a great place to visit and learn about the history of the United States and the causes behind the beginning of the Revolutionary War. Read More

The History

During 1771, a group of backcountry farmers known as the Regulators battled with the Royal governor William Tryon and his militia. The spot of that battle is now the Alamance Battleground State Historic Site.

Due to a growing anger from increasing cost of land, issues with taxes, and the collusion between public officials and creditors, many small farmers in the area wrote petitions, formed associations, and sought a peaceful way to handle their grievances. The British government refused to respond to these farmers which led to more frustration and ultimately to violence which is now called the Battle of Alamance.  Some historians consider this battle first salvo of the Revolutionary War even though it was several years before the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

While the Regulator movement was defeated at Alamance, their struggle was enough to send shockwaves, not only through North Carolina, but also through the whole of Colonial America. This created tensions that help fan the flames which resulted in the Revolutionary War.

Facilities to Visit

While you are at the Alamance Battleground State Historic Site, you will be able to visit a number of facilities to learn more about the history of this battle. Some of the places to visit include:

The Many Benefits of Central Air Conditioning

July 28, 2025/in Articles/by William Hammer

Central air conditioning has become standard in American homes. Approximately 75% of homes in the US have central air, meaning a forced air system that consists of ducts to disburse the cooled air throughout the home. This modern convenience is something we often take for granted, that is, until the system breaks down suddenly and we find ourselves in need of Eden AC repair. Consider the many benefits of central air conditioning.

Home Comfort

The most obvious benefit of central air conditioning is comfort. Your home will feel cool and comfortable on even the hottest of days when you have central air. Advancements in technology have made air conditioners highly effective at cooling homes even when the temperature outside is scorching. Relax and sleep better during the late spring, summer, and early fall months in your cool, refreshing home.

Energy Efficiency

Central air conditioners are some of the most energy-efficient home cooling systems available. Technological advancements have improved efficiency, reducing the amount of electricity required to run air conditioners by at least half when compared with older systems. Central air uses significantly less energy than multiple window units and other home cooling systems.

Humidity Control

You’ve heard people say that it’s not as much the heat as the humidity that feels so uncomfortable. Central air conditioning controls the humidity in your home, which not only helps it feel more comfortable, but it also removes harmful moisture from the air inside your home that could lead to mold and mildew growth. Ask anyone who has mold removed from a home and they’ll tell you, the process is lengthy and costly.

Improved Air Quality

Even with basic disposable air filters, your central air conditioning system will improve the air quality in your home. Filters remove dust, dirt, pollen, and other particles from the air that can cause allergies and other respiratory illnesses. High efficiency filters can remove even smaller particles from the air. You can even take air quality one step further and add an air purification system to your central air which is capable of killing airborne pathogens and producing new, clean air.

Low Maintenance

A central air conditioning system is very low maintenance. All that is recommended is yearly tune-ups and replacement of disposable filters about every 3 months. If your home is newly built or has had any significant renovations, it is recommended that you change your filters monthly for the first 6 months following construction.

What Are the Best Air Conditioning Units?

If you’re considering adding or upgrading to central air conditioning, there are many high-quality systems on the market. Consider top brands like Lennox, York, Goodman, ThermoPride, and Armstrong Air to name a few. The best air conditioning units have a SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) of at least 16, with top systems at a rating of 20-22.

I first used Berico in August of 2009 and am now entering my 6th year. I have always believed that it is better to prevent a problem than to solve one, and your technician have done a "bang up" job of keeping my unit in excellent working order.

David Deasy

Every visit by Berico is a pleasure. The technicians are friendly, knowledgable and honest. I appreciate the time they take to explain things.

Our technicial did a good job of servicing our two systems for summer. He helped teach us-once again- how to make changes in the thermostat, which we need to do before travelling. Thanks. RB

Gentlemen came out and installed new tank and were very professional. They completed the job in a good amount of time and cleaned up behind themselves. Would highly recommend to others!

My system uses a ridiculous amount of oil and last year, I ran out regularly. Becky at Carolina made sure to keep an eye out for us and followed up regularly to ensure we were in good shape. They worked with us on our payments and were just really good to us.

There isn't a nicer group of people to deal with. The service was done with a very polite maintenance man. He was quick, polite and very friendly, and very efficient. I would recommend them to anyone. I also want to mention how polite the office staff was.

We are a very unique customer for Berico. We use them to maintain our seven air conditioners for our commercial data center with hundreds of servers, routers and switches. Their techs are always careful in our data center and take extra caution to make sure they don't disturb any of the servers.

Rick Sullivan

Everyone at Berico has been very helpful. Salesperson was very straightforward and knew the product well. Office staff has been extremely personable, yet professional. The installation crew was very efficient. Looking forward to a long relationship.

We have been using Berico since 1976 and have been pleased enough that we have never changed providers. Their workers have been helpful and competent. We are now on our second furnace and second heat pump and while there have been problems they were all resolved.
