Why Does My Furnace Smell Weird?

July 28, 2025/in Uncategorized/by William Hammer

When your furnace comes on, there are probably some things that you get used to happening shortly after. For example, you’ll naturally feel some air coming out of the vents, and you may hear a bit of noise that comes from the equipment running somewhere in the house. What you probably aren’t used to, however, is a smell developing in the area of the furnace. Why would it smell, and is this a sign of trouble? The answers can be found below.

As one of the leading HVAC contractors Burlington has to offer, Berico is no stranger to the various issues that can pop up with a furnace. Whether you need furnace repair in Burlington or any other kind of HVAC service, your first step is to reach out to the Berico team to schedule an appointment.

The Matter of Burning Dust

When a furnace hasn’t been used for a while – such as in the fall after a long, warm summer when a heater wasn’t needed – there will likely be dust that has settled on many of the surfaces. Then, when it is turned on, that dust will quickly burn off and let a musty odor escape into the air. If you are standing near a vent when the furnace first starts after a long period of inactivity, you will almost certainly notice this smell.

The good news is this smell is nothing to worry about. It’s perfectly normal for some dust to be burned up when the furnace is started, and the smell should go away quite quickly. As long as the smell fades away and the furnace seems to be operating normally, you can safely assume that it was the result of dust and just move on.

Other, More Serious Problems

Unfortunately, not every bad smell coming from a furnace is going to be so harmless. There are smells that can point to more serious issues, including those listed below –

  • Rotten egg smell. This is a serious matter if you use natural gas and should be addressed right away, as the smell of rotten eggs, or sulfur, typically points to a leak of the Don’t try to use any of your appliances when you notice this smell, and you should get out of the house while also calling the gas company for help.

  • Electrical odor. If you smell something metallic while also noticing that your furnace isn’t running quite right, it could be overheating issues in your electrical components. There is obviously a fire hazard to be concerned with when any electrical parts are compromised, so stop using the furnace and call Berico for assistance.

  • Moldy smell. If it seems like there is mold being spread around the house while the system is running, that might be an issue in your ducts. Have them cleaned and look for any signs of leaks that could be helping mold develop.

Which HVAC System is the Most Energy Efficient?

July 28, 2025/in Uncategorized/by William Hammer

Efficiency is a key trait to monitor in an HVAC system. When an HVAC system is able to get the job done without using a ton of fuel, it is cheaper to run – and kinder to the environment, as well. But it’s not always easy to determine what kind of HVAC system is the most efficient, so this article will aim to clear things up a bit.

Looking for the best HVAC company available in the Greensboro area for installation or repair projects? You’ve already found it – Berico has been an industry leader in this region for generations and can be trusted to deliver time after time.

A Few Contenders

The good news on this topic is that there are a few different possible choices to consider when looking for an HVAC system that is going to be efficient for years to come. Anything that you are buying today is going to be far more efficient than a system that was made 20 years ago, for example, so simply starting with a new system in your home will be a nice upgrade.

When talking about efficient systems, propane and natural gas are always going to be near the top of the list. A good gas-powered system is going to perform well while still giving you nice efficiency ratings. To make sure your house stays nice and comfortable even when the weather gets particularly cold outside, you can’t go wrong with propane or natural gas.

With that said, a geothermal heat pump is another strong option in the efficiency category. Since these types of systems tap into the natural stability of the underground temperature of the earth, they are able to transfer heat efficiently between the house and the ground. One downside to going with a geothermal system is while they are quite efficient, the upfront installation cost tends to be significant.

An Alternative Plan

For some homes, a central HVAC system – no matter how it is powered – just isn’t going to work. In those cases, a mini-split system with no ducts can be an excellent choice for efficiency and performance. Since only a few select rooms are going to be served by the system, you won’t be wasting any energy by heating or cooling parts of the house that are rarely used.

How Do You Make This Choice?

The best way to decide which type of HVAC system is right for you is to team up with an experienced company like Berico to get personalized answers to all of your questions. There are a number of factors that come into play here, and a trained professional is your best bet to sort through the noise and get to the heart of what kind of HVAC equipment will serve you well over the long run.

Whether you need the best furnace maintenance Greensboro has to offer, or you need someone to complete some timely AC repair, the answer is always Berico. Take a moment now to get in touch and learn more.

What is Considered a Major Repair in HVAC?

July 28, 2025/in Uncategorized/by William Hammer

There are many different types of repairs that can be required for an HVAC system. Some of those repairs are quite minor – they can be completed quickly and easily for minimal cost. Of course, that’s not always the case, and some repairs can be rather expensive and time-consuming.

So, what is it that counts as a major repair in the HVAC world? That’s the question that this article is going to address. If you need help with any kind of Greensboro HVAC issue in your home, take a moment now to contact Berico and get assistance from a friendly and experienced team.

Some Examples of Major HVAC Repair

Perhaps the best way to understand what counts as a major HVAC repair is to go through a few examples of jobs that would fit in that category. Such possibilities are as follows –

  • Compressor replacement. Since the compressor is the heart and soul of an air conditioning system, it certainly fits the bill here. This is a costly repair due to both the cost of the part itself and the labor required to install it correctly.

  • Heat exchanger repair or replacement. For a system that is supposed to be heating your home, the heat exchanger is a vital component. While this part is pretty reliable overall, a cracked exchanger is a dangerous issue that needs to be addressed immediately and counts as a major repair.

  • Refrigerant leaks. If your HVAC system develops a leak that causes it to gradually lose refrigerant, the repair work needed to correct the problem can be significant. The leak has to be located and then repaired, and these lines often run in hard-to-reach areas of a home.

The list above is just a partial accounting of what could fall into the category of a major repair. Other potential issues to include here are electrical problems that need to be addressed and blower motor issues. Whatever the case, if it is going to be expensive and take some time to fix, it is surely a major repair.

Deciding Whether to Repair or Replace

When talking about a major repair to an HVAC component, there is always going to be a debate over whether to repair or replace a particular item. In some cases, the cost of the parts and labor for a repair will approach – or even exceed – what it would cost to just start over.

This is the kind of choice that you don’t want to make on your own. It’s best to work directly with a professional to discuss the situation, get a better understanding of the pros and cons on both sides, and then make an informed choice.

No matter what type of HVAC repair you require, there is no better option in the Greensboro area than Berico. Also, if your needs go beyond repair and move into the area of furnace installation or some other type of project, Berico will be able to handle that kind of job as well. Take a moment now to get in touch and learn more!

Are Newer HVAC Systems More Efficient?

July 28, 2025/in Uncategorized/by William Hammer

In essentially every market, equipment tends to get better as time passes. These improvements can come from advances in technology, new materials becoming available, better design, and on and on. Most of the time, it’s safe to assume that something new is going to be more effective in every way at getting the job done.

But does this line of thinking apply to the efficiency of HVAC systems? This article will explore that important question. When you are ready to have HVAC repair completed, or when you need to install a new Eden HVAC system, call Berico right away to put the right experts on your side.

A Definitive Answer

As you would expect, and are probably guessing, yes – newer HVAC systems tend to be far more efficient than systems from years past. If you are currently using a rather old, worn-out system and you have new equipment installed in your home, you can expect to enjoy a notable improvement in efficiency.

The exact size of your efficiency improvement is going to depend on many different factors, such as the age and condition of your current system and the new equipment you choose to purchase. It’s a virtual guarantee that you will experience more efficient performance, with that improvement ranging from moderate to downright incredible, depending on the circumstances.

What to Look for in Efficiency Ratings

If a major part of your motivation for upgrading your HVAC system is tied to efficiency, you’ll want to know how to shop for equipment to maximize the impact. The best way to do this is to check the SEER rating attached to any piece of equipment you may purchase. The SEER ratings are easy to understand, with higher numbers indicating a more efficient system.

New systems are all required to have a rating of at least 14, whereas you might still be using an older system that was rated at only 8 or 10. Investing in good equipment with a strong SEER rating will cut down on your energy consumption for years to come.

Look for Other Great Features

Efficiency is an important part of picking out HVAC equipment, but it shouldn’t be your only concern. There are many other factors that will influence which model you pick, such as additional features that can give you even better performance. Those include variable speed motors and the ability to control zones within the house. You may also want to attach your new HVAC equipment to a smart thermostat so you can control the system remotely and easily dial in the right settings for your needs.

There is a lot to like about being able to use a new HVAC system in your home. Of course, if you aren’t quite ready to upgrade and are still using an older system, you’ll likely need a trusted partner to keep that system in working order. For the best AC repair Eden has to offer, or any other kind of HVAC maintenance, make a call to Berico and know that you are in good hands.

Who Competes with AmeriGas?

July 28, 2025/in Uncategorized/by William Hammer

The AmeriGas name is one of the biggest and most known names in the entire propane industry. If you have been looking into options for propane suppliers, there is no doubt that AmeriGas is one of the options that you have uncovered. But who competes with AmeriGas? What are your options if you don’t want to work with a massive corporation for your propane delivery? This article will dive into those questions below.

To cut right to the chase, Berico competes with AmeriGas and is standing ready to offer you outstanding service from day one. To learn more, reach out to the Berico team today and get started.

A Variety of Smaller Players

It might seem like AmeriGas is the only game in town, but that’s far from the case. There are actually a number of smaller players in this market throughout the area, with Berico being a leader among that group. Thanks to a history that dates back more than a century, Berico is a trusted name in this region and is an excellent choice for anyone opting to go a different direction than AmeriGas.

The Many Advantages of Going Local

As you think about making your choice for a propane supplier, you need to consider what is really important in this process. What is it that you want your supplier to be able to do for you, and what do you want to avoid? Keep these points in mind to better understand why you may want to stay local with this selection:

  • Get great service. This is what it is all about when working with a local company. Do you think Berico would have been able to stay in business for more than 100 years by offering poor customer service along the way? Absolutely not. This is a business that is built on service, and that comes through from the very first time you reach out. A massive company with a distant call center simply can’t offer the kind of service and attention to detail that is provided by Berico – they are too big to make such service practical.

  • Support friends and neighbors. The money you spend with Berico will largely be staying in your community, as it is supporting a business that employs people around you, and that invests back in the community as a whole. Rather than shipping your hard-earned money off to a huge corporation, you can feel good about keeping things close to home (and getting great service at the same time).

  • Plenty of other services. When you need something else done other than a delivery of propane dropped off at your home, you can just call Berico and talk to a real person who is based in your area and will be able to help. If you are looking for that kind of support from a company like AmeriGas, you may find yourself out of luck.

It might feel like AmeriGas is the only choice when looking for Greensboro propane, but that simply isn’t the case. There are many alternatives to consider, but none will prove to be a better fit than Berico. All you need to do is reach out directly to the Berico team for more information and your propane worries will be a thing of the past.

What Are the Different Types of Air Filters for AC?

July 28, 2025/in Uncategorized/by William Hammer

The air filter is simply one of the most important components in your air conditioning system. Without a good air filter in place, the air that flows through your equipment won’t be as clean as it should be, and the performance of your air conditioner will suffer as a result. Not only that, but you might run into the need for AC repair sooner than necessary, as well.

So, what types of air filters are out there, and which one should you use in your system? Those questions will be answered below. And, if you need to work with an HVAC contractor on any type of heating or cooling project in the Greensboro, High Point, Eden, or Burlington areas, remember to turn to Berico as your first choice.

A Few Options Available

For the most part, you don’t have to overthink the process of picking out an air filter. As long as you get one that is appropriate for your system and fits properly, you should be all set. On the bottom end of the spectrum, you will find basic fiberglass air filters, which are disposable and very affordable. While these will do a sufficient job of keeping big particles from passing through and reaching your HVAC equipment, they won’t do a great job of helping people in the house with respiratory issues breathe freely.

To upgrade your air quality and help people with asthma or other issues, consider looking for a HEPA filter. These will cost you a bit more, but they have the added benefit of screening significantly more particulate matter out of the air. If you want or need the cleanest air for your home, and you don’t mind paying a bit more when you swap out the filter, a HEPA model is the way to go.

Partner with Berico

Even once you know the importance of always having a good air filter – that isn’t too dirty – in your system, you still may struggle to keep up with the task of replacing yours regularly. Life is busy, you have a lot going on, and it can easily slip your mind.

This is why Berico is proud to offer an air filter subscription program so a new one will come automatically, and you can just put it in place when it arrives. Berico works with FilterFetch for this program, and it will make your life a little easier while making sure your HVAC is living up to its potential at the same time. The delivery cost of the filters is free, and you won’t have to worry about forgetting and going too long between changes. Once you know how to do it, each air filter change will take just a matter of moments.

Using the right air filter for your AC system is important, but so too is replacing that system when it has outlived its useful life. For professional AC installation that you can trust to be completed correctly and for a fair price, reach out to Berico right away to get started.

Will a New Furnace Save Me Money?

July 28, 2025/in Uncategorized/by William Hammer

Installing a new furnace feels like a big expense that most homeowners want to put off for as long as possible. And, to be sure, it is a significant investment. But what if making that investment could actually start to pay off in terms of financial savings sooner rather than later? That just might be possible, and this article will take a closer look at the matter.

If you are ready for a new furnace installation, or if you decide that HVAC repair is actually the better way to go, Berico is the right team for the job in the Greensboro area. All it takes is one phone call to learn more about Berico and start addressing whatever issues you may be facing in this area.

It’s an Efficiency Game

When trying to decide what the most cost-effective way to proceed will be with your furnace, efficiency should be your top concern. In simple terms, an efficient furnace does a great job of converting fuel into as much heat as possible for your home. No system is perfectly efficient – there is some energy loss along the way in all heating systems – but good, modern equipment is incredibly adept at minimizing fuel use while maximizing results.

This is at the heart of why a new furnace may be able to save you money. If you spend the money on a new furnace now, you will start to enjoy energy – and money – savings each month moving forward. At some point, the money you have saved on energy will surpass what you spent on the new furnace, and you’ll be coming out ahead from that point on. It’s hard to say exactly when that will be, as variables like the cost of energy and the cost of the furnace come into play.

More Than Just Savings

The other important point that shouldn’t be lost here while talking about financial savings is that a new furnace will simply do a better job and make your home a more comfortable place to live. If you have a particularly old furnace at the moment, it is probably inconsistent and slow to heat your home (in addition to the excessive energy it is consuming). By upgrading to new equipment, you will be thrilled with the improved results and you’ll have a house that is more comfortable even on the coldest of winter days.

There is also the reliability factor to consider. Have you dealt with times in previous winters when your furnace just wouldn’t work and you had to suffer through a cold night? That’s extremely frustrating, but you can leave those worries behind when you have a brand-new furnace in your home. That piece of equipment can be expected to work reliably and you’ll be able to just flip the switch on the thermostat, sit back, and let the furnace do its job.

Greensboro HVAC is a competitive market, but Berico has risen to the top over generations through a commitment to quality, reliable service, and great pricing. You will always come away feeling like you got a great deal when you partner with Berico, so take a moment now to reach out and get started.

When Should You Replace Your Ductwork?

July 28, 2025/in Uncategorized/by William Hammer

Of all of the components of your home that work behind the scenes, the ductwork that serves your HVAC system is probably the one you think about the least. The air just comes out of the vents when the system is running, and that’s the end of it – few people spend time thinking about the ducts that carry the air around.

At some point, however, those ducts will likely need to be replaced. How do you know when that time has come? Working with a professional team like those at Berico is a good start, as you’ll be able to get the best HVAC service Greensboro has to offer and you can ask any questions you may have. Get started today.

There’s No Expiration Date

The first thing to know about replacing ductwork is that there is no specific point at which the ducts will no longer be in good condition. In fact, there is a good chance that they will last well into the future, as they are typically tucked away out of sight and not at much risk of damage on a day-to-day basis. Of all of the parts of your HVAC system, the ducts are the component that generally needs the least attention.

With that said, you can’t necessarily count on your ducts to last forever. It is possible that they will run into some type of trouble along the way, such as a leak developing that makes your system less efficient and less effective. If you have a leak in one of your ducts, and those ducts are already pretty old, to begin with, it might make sense to simply replace everything at once rather than trying to have a repair completed. Those older ducts could just keep having trouble even after the repair is done, so taking that chance to run new ducts throughout the building may be a smart move.

Think About It When Installing a New Air Conditioner or Furnace

You don’t necessarily have to install new ducts when installing a new air conditioner or furnace, but this is a good time to review the situation and consider upgrading. In some cases, it actually will be necessary to upgrade your ducts along with the HVAC, as the new system may need ducts that match the size of the unit that is being installed. Of course, the expert team at Berico will be able to advise on this matter so you can make the right choice. If you wind up with both a new air conditioner and a new set of ducts, you’ll be all set on the HVAC side of things and should be able to enjoy years of reliable performance ahead.

Replacing ductwork is only one of many different things that Berico can do for you. Among the leading HVAC companies in Greensboro, Berico offers furnace service, new equipment installation, and on and on. Whatever you need, get started today with a phone call to learn more or to schedule your appointment.

Trending in Propane: Berico Fuels Celebrates 100-Year Anniversary

July 28, 2025/in Uncategorized/by William Hammer

From Trending in Propane, September 14, 2024:

Berico Fuels celebrates 100 years in business this year having started as a one-man operation collecting excess coal that fell from traveling trains into a wheel barrel to sell to neighbors. Today, Berico is a 115-employee operation selling multiple fuels from several locations throughout central North Carolina, delivered from 92 vehicles. Today’s Berico is a much more diversified and robust company not only with fuels, but propane, lubriants, HVAC and Plumbing services. In addition, Berico has a wholesale fuel company, Gateco, operating at multiple terminals in Greensboro.

“My Great Grandfather started the company selling coal,” said Will Berry, Berico’s current President. “His name was William Nathan Berry and as each of 13 of his children were born into his family, a new coal truck was added to the business. The company continues to follow the motto W. N. set; ‘Always Dependable.’ One of the 13 children, Joe Berry, my Grandfather, took over the business and added retail heating oil to the mix. He invested in a terminal in Greensboro.” Berry said that his father, current Berico CEO Tom Berry and a partner, John Fuquay, who was outside the family helped the business grow into propane, motor oil and lubricants in the 1990’s.

In most homes, and for most people, the ideal humidity range is going to be somewhere between 30% – 50%. When the humidity in your house is within those limits, you are likely to feel pretty comfortable throughout the day and night.

Sometimes, the humidity in your house will naturally fall into that range and you won’t need to do anything to keep it there. At other times, however, the humidity may stray either too low or high, and you’ll want to consider using modern HVAC equipment to bring it back into the sweet spot.

Why Humidity Matters

The introduction mentioned how humidity plays a major role in human comfort, and that certainly is true. But the comfort of you and your family is only part of the reason that humidity is so important. Keeping your humidity levels under control will also help your HVAC system not work as hard throughout the year. It’s hard to cool moist air, and hard to heat dry air, so your HVAC equipment is going to have to work harder – and use more fuel – when your humidity strays from the ideal range.

It’s also possible to develop problems with things like mold and mildew when your indoor humidity remains high for extended periods. Having so much moisture in the air will make it possible for organic growth to occur in places where you don’t want it, and the damage to your home could potentially be serious.

A Seasonal Problem

Fighting the battle against humidity problems is a job that changes throughout the year. During the summer months in the Greensboro area, it’s all about keeping the moist air outside – the humidity rises throughout this part of the country during the summer, and you’ll want to have a solution like a dehumidifier to keep your house comfortable.

Then, in the winter months, the cooler air will be much drier, and you might find that your humidity levels dip surprisingly low. Residents of the Greensboro area don’t have to worry as much about low humidity as people in northern climates, but it’s still something to monitor.

The installation of a whole-home dehumidifier is a great step toward remaining comfortable all year long, and Berico is ready to take on that project as soon as you call. Of course, the Berico team offers much more, including Greensboro furnace repair and many other services. Get started right away!

I recommend Comfort & Protection Service Plans to everyone! When my oil furnace needed to replace its heat exchanger and some additional parts, being on a plan saved me $1,095.

I first used Berico in August of 2009 and am now entering my 6th year. I have always believed that it is better to prevent a problem than to solve one, and your technician have done a "bang up" job of keeping my unit in excellent working order.

Every visit by Berico is a pleasure. The technicians are friendly, knowledgable and honest. I appreciate the time they take to explain things.

Robert Dixon

Our technicial did a good job of servicing our two systems for summer. He helped teach us-once again- how to make changes in the thermostat, which we need to do before travelling. Thanks. RB

Berico recently installed a new unit at our home. Berico offered several financing options for us and the approval process took 30 seconds. We were very impressed with the professionalism, honesty, dedication, and personal touch of the whole work crew of our job.

Norma Wilkins

Gentlemen came out and installed new tank and were very professional. They completed the job in a good amount of time and cleaned up behind themselves. Would highly recommend to others!

William Benge

My system uses a ridiculous amount of oil and last year, I ran out regularly. Becky at Carolina made sure to keep an eye out for us and followed up regularly to ensure we were in good shape. They worked with us on our payments and were just really good to us.

Tim Moore

This is an outstanding company, they are always on time every time and do what they say they will do. I highly recommend them!

Signed up for the Annual maintenance service after hearing for a commercial on the radio for them. Everyone I have dealt with has always been nice and professional. Had an issue where I needed a new capacitor on my heat pump unit - no big deal.

I just can't say enough about the good service and friendly folks at Berico. Keep up the good work! I like your Sharing the Warmth program too. It is a great way to get help to our neighbors, even those we don't know.

Suzanne Miller

There isn't a nicer group of people to deal with. The service was done with a very polite maintenance man. He was quick, polite and very friendly, and very efficient. I would recommend them to anyone. I also want to mention how polite the office staff was.

Nicky Smith

We are a very unique customer for Berico. We use them to maintain our seven air conditioners for our commercial data center with hundreds of servers, routers and switches. Their techs are always careful in our data center and take extra caution to make sure they don't disturb any of the servers.

Rick Sullivan

Everyone at Berico has been very helpful. Salesperson was very straightforward and knew the product well. Office staff has been extremely personable, yet professional. The installation crew was very efficient. Looking forward to a long relationship.

We have been using Berico since 1976 and have been pleased enough that we have never changed providers. Their workers have been helpful and competent. We are now on our second furnace and second heat pump and while there have been problems they were all resolved.

Eric Martin

Berico (by way of Alamance Oil in Burlington) has consistently provided immediate service and help with my account when I have needed it.
