July 28, 2025/in Articles/by William Hammer

The Tanger Family Bicentennial Garden is known for some of its beautiful annual plantings and unique bronze sculptures found throughout. If you are looking for a relaxing retreat to get away from it all, then this garden is a great option. With 7.5-acres, there is plenty of room to stretch out and feel at home with nature. It is located at 1105 Hobbs Rd. Greensboro, NC 27410.

What to See at Tanger Family Bicentennial Garden?

There are many things to see when you visit this unique spot in Greensboro, NC. The wedding gazebo is a popular spot for some of those elegant spring weddings and provides a focal spot that many like to enjoy as they walk through the garden. The man-made re-circulating stream provides texture, sound, and movement that is relaxing and some say mesmerizing, and the sensory garden is a great way to engage in an interactive landscape experience.

In addition to the beautiful flowers and plants around the garden, visitors will have a chance to look at the various sculptures placed throughout the garden. These provide an artistic as well as historic flair to the garden.

Finally, make sure that you make a stop at the Paver Plaza. This is located near the entrance of the garden, and it offers a way for visitors to help support the garden by contributing and having their name added to the garden as well.

The Old Mill

The Old Mill was constructed in 2017 and is meant to be similar to the mill that David Caldwell operated at the same spot in the 1780s. This mill includes a free-standing water wheel that works in conjunction with the re-circulating stream that meanders throughout the garden.

The Alexander Mangum Memorial Garden

This is a unique area of the garden that was completed in April of 2020. If you need a place to rest as you walk through the garden or you want to sit down and take it all in, then this is the part of the garden where you should stop. This garden has two benches, a stone floor, and three sets of wind chimes to help you feel calm and relaxed. It’s an excellent spot to meditate, pray or just relax and enjoy the beauty.

Camberly’s Garden

Camberly’s Garden is inspired by the memory of Camberly Holiday, the daughter of a former Greensboro Mayor, Keith Holiday. It is there to honor the memory of children who have left us too early and can be a serene and comforting spot to everyone who visits and particularly those that have loved ones that have moved on too early.

Admissions

Your family is sure to love all of the attractions and things to do when you wander around the Burlington City Park.  With such a variety of activities you might just find that the City Park is your favorite place in Burlington.

The Dentzel Menagerie Carousel

The Carousel is the centerpiece of this large park. It was built by the Dentzel Carousel company and includes 46 hand-carved animals, with three to each row inside. Currently, there are only 14 Carousels left from this company, making it a rare and very special find indeed.

This carousel is a big draw for young children, but adults appreciate the craftmanship and history of this work of art.  The Dentzel carvers are known for their attention to detail, and you can see this in the faces and the muscle definition of the horses. In fact, the animals all have shiny, round glass eyes, real horse-hair tails, and no two animals are exactly alike. Take a walk by the carousel and enjoy this historical piece of art. Alamance Battleground State Historic Site

July 28, 2025/in Articles/by William Hammer

The Alamance Battleground State Historic Site at 5803 NC-62, Burlington, NC 27215 is a great place to visit and learn about the history of the United States and the causes behind the beginning of the Revolutionary War. Read More

The History

During 1771, a group of backcountry farmers known as the Regulators battled with the Royal governor William Tryon and his militia. The spot of that battle is now the Alamance Battleground State Historic Site.

Due to a growing anger from increasing cost of land, issues with taxes, and the collusion between public officials and creditors, many small farmers in the area wrote petitions, formed associations, and sought a peaceful way to handle their grievances. The British government refused to respond to these farmers which led to more frustration and ultimately to violence which is now called the Battle of Alamance.  Some historians consider this battle first salvo of the Revolutionary War even though it was several years before the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

While the Regulator movement was defeated at Alamance, their struggle was enough to send shockwaves, not only through North Carolina, but also through the whole of Colonial America. This created tensions that help fan the flames which resulted in the Revolutionary War.

Facilities to Visit

While you are at the Alamance Battleground State Historic Site, you will be able to visit a number of facilities to learn more about the history of this battle. Some of the places to visit include:

  • John Allen House: This home includes a smokehouse and pieces from this time period.

  • Visitor Center: This area houses different exhibits along with an audiovisual program that talks about The War of the Regulation.

  • Trails, Monuments, and Outdoor Exhibits: On the grounds, you will be able to find a ¾ mile nature rail that will walk you to different parts of the battlefield, including the James Hunter Monument.

There are also a number of areas that are handicapped accessible including picnic facilities and a gift shop. Visitors to the area will be able to enjoy programs and group activities throughout the year. The biggest one is the Recreation of Battle of Alamance, held on May 16, that shows a unique glimpse of life during colonial life. Group and individual tours are encouraged around the historic site as well. Explore more

I recommend Comfort & Protection Service Plans to everyone! When my oil furnace needed to replace its heat exchanger and some additional parts, being on a plan saved me $1,095.

I first used Berico in August of 2009 and am now entering my 6th year. I have always believed that it is better to prevent a problem than to solve one, and your technician have done a "bang up" job of keeping my unit in excellent working order.

David Deasy

Every visit by Berico is a pleasure. The technicians are friendly, knowledgable and honest. I appreciate the time they take to explain things.

Robert Dixon

Our technicial did a good job of servicing our two systems for summer. He helped teach us-once again- how to make changes in the thermostat, which we need to do before travelling. Thanks. RB

Brandi Simmons

Berico recently installed a new unit at our home. Berico offered several financing options for us and the approval process took 30 seconds. We were very impressed with the professionalism, honesty, dedication, and personal touch of the whole work crew of our job.

Norma Wilkins

Gentlemen came out and installed new tank and were very professional. They completed the job in a good amount of time and cleaned up behind themselves. Would highly recommend to others!

William Benge

My system uses a ridiculous amount of oil and last year, I ran out regularly. Becky at Carolina made sure to keep an eye out for us and followed up regularly to ensure we were in good shape. They worked with us on our payments and were just really good to us.

Tim Moore

This is an outstanding company, they are always on time every time and do what they say they will do. I highly recommend them!

Daniel Klecka

Signed up for the Annual maintenance service after hearing for a commercial on the radio for them. Everyone I have dealt with has always been nice and professional. Had an issue where I needed a new capacitor on my heat pump unit - no big deal.

Ann Somers

I just can't say enough about the good service and friendly folks at Berico. Keep up the good work! I like your Sharing the Warmth program too. It is a great way to get help to our neighbors, even those we don't know.

Suzanne Miller

There isn't a nicer group of people to deal with. The service was done with a very polite maintenance man. He was quick, polite and very friendly, and very efficient. I would recommend them to anyone. I also want to mention how polite the office staff was.

Nicky Smith

We are a very unique customer for Berico. We use them to maintain our seven air conditioners for our commercial data center with hundreds of servers, routers and switches. Their techs are always careful in our data center and take extra caution to make sure they don't disturb any of the servers.

Rick Sullivan

Everyone at Berico has been very helpful. Salesperson was very straightforward and knew the product well. Office staff has been extremely personable, yet professional. The installation crew was very efficient. Looking forward to a long relationship.

David MacInnes

We have been using Berico since 1976 and have been pleased enough that we have never changed providers. Their workers have been helpful and competent. We are now on our second furnace and second heat pump and while there have been problems they were all resolved.

Eric Martin

Berico (by way of Alamance Oil in Burlington) has consistently provided immediate service and help with my account when I have needed it.
