HVAC FAQs

How often is HVAC repair necessary?

Heating and cooling experts recommend having your HVAC system serviced twice a year, once in the fall for your furnace and once in the spring for your air conditioner. You may have more success with scheduling if you aim for late summer and late winter when technicians are less busy.

Can you save money with HVAC replacement?

Replacing an old HVAC system with a new, energy efficient system can save you money in a variety of ways. Your energy bills will be lower, and you’ll spend less on repairs with a new system.

Do I need to replace my air conditioner if it uses R-22 refrigerant?

Refrigerant is the substance inside of your air conditioner that absorbs heat and creates cool air. Older systems used R-22 refrigerant, but it has been phased out of production. If your system uses R-22 refrigerant it would be a good idea to replace it since all HVAC contractors are now working on a limited and very expensive supply.

How often should you replace your HVAC filters?

At the very least you should replace the filters in your intake vents every 6 months. For better results replace them every 3 months. Filters prevent dirt, dust, and debris from getting into your HVAC system and reducing its efficiency.

What does SEER mean?

SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio, which is the measurement of how efficient an air conditioner is. A SEER of 14-16 is considered high efficiency and anything above that is even more efficient.

How does a heat pump work?

You may have heard that a heat pump is an efficient type of HVAC system. It works by transferring heat from one place to another. When it is cold outside, a heat pump pulls heat from the air, bringing it inside to heat your home. When it is warm outside, a heat pump gathers the heat from inside your home and transfers it outside. It is still a forced air system with vents that distribute air throughout your home.

Is duct cleaning necessary?

Air travels from your HVAC system throughout your home through the ducts. Over time dust and debris can get into the ducts and mold can form. It is good to have your ductwork cleaned yearly to keep your HVAC system clean and improve the air quality in your home.

Does your HVAC system control the air quality in your home?

A typical HVAC system with regular filters controls humidity and removes some particles from the air. But to make a noticeable improvement in your indoor air quality it helps to use high efficiency filters that are capable of removing more particles from the air. An air purification system is even more effective, killing pathogens and producing clean air.

What’s the ideal temperature to set your thermostat to?

If your goal is to save energy, the ideal temperature for your thermostat is 68 degrees Fahrenheit in the winter and 78 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer. Using fans and wearing warmer clothes can help these temperatures feel more comfortable.

What are the warning signs that my HVAC system needs to be replaced?

There are a few warning signs that indicate the need for HVAC replacement:

  • Frequent repairs.
  • Rising energy bills.
  • Excessive noise.
  • Tripping circuit breakers.
  • Uneven temperatures throughout your home.

If you notice any of the above, your HVAC system may be on its last legs. Consider having it inspected to determine if replacement is necessary.

Do You Really Need to Service Your Furnace Every Year?

As a homeowner, you have a lot to keep up with month after month. There are various systems that keep your home running properly, and all of those systems require some type of attention. Given the many responsibilities you bear, it’s tempting to let some of them slide from time to time. Furnace servicing is one of the items that often end up on that list – is it really that important? This article will take a closer look at that question.

When the time does come to have your furnace serviced, Berico is the easy choice. As one of the leading HVAC companies in North Carolina, Berico has fair pricing and an experienced team ready to serve you.

The Simple Answer is Yes
You might have guessed it, but the answer to the question posed in the title of this article is yes – it is a good idea to have your furnace serviced every year. This is an appliance that is asked to work hard throughout the cold months of the year, so you need to make sure it is up to that challenge by having it serviced by a reputable professional, regularly.

Yes, you’ll need to spend a little money to have this work performed, although it’s rather affordable when you choose a trusted name like Berico. For your money, you’ll gain many benefits, including the following:

•Retain your warranty coverage. One important motivation to have service performed is to keep your warranty valid, if there is one in place for the equipment. Most warranties will require that you have professional service performed annually if that warranty is to remain valid.

•Get better performance. Annual service is not only about keeping the system working, but it’s about making sure the equipment is living up to its potential. By having service performed and making sure the system is all working correctly, any minor issues can be addressed and the performance of the system as a whole will benefit.

•Avoid bad timing. You probably don’t want to deal with a furnace that stops working in the middle of a frigid winter. That’s a busy time for HVAC companies, of course, and you might have to wait a bit to have the repairs completed. With annual service, you can stay ahead of the game and make such a situation far less likely.
•Save money. This is one of those cases where you need to spend money to save money. Investing in annual maintenance is better than paying for costly repairs later, which are likely to far exceed what it would have cost to just have the service performed in the first place.

Only the Best Will Do
The quality of the service you receive will depend on the quality of the partner you pick for the work. On that point, make sure to call Berico right away. You’ll be in good hands with such an experienced partner, and the team at Berico will be able to handle whatever situation arises with your furnace in the months and years ahead.

Furnace FAQs

Many homeowners know little about how their HVAC system works, including the furnace that keeps them warm during the winter. You don’t need to be an expert on this topic, but understanding the basics is helpful – and this FAQ will provide some good information for you to understand the basics about your furnace. When you are ready to schedule HVAC service or furnace repair in or around Greensboro, call Berico right away.

Q: Should I upgrade to a smart thermostat?
A: Running your furnace, and the rest of your HVAC equipment, off of a smart thermostat is not necessary, but it is a nice luxury. When you have the ability to control your system from your smartphone, you can make small adjustments even when you are away from the house – potentially cutting down on energy usage while improving comfort at the same time. Smart thermostats are relatively affordable and have a lot to offer, so this upgrade is well worth installing.

Q: What should I do if my furnace stops working?
A: Calling a reliable contractor like Berico should be your first step when the furnace goes out and will no longer heat your home. Getting started on repair work as soon as possible is your best bet to avoid a delayed outage. Of course, if it is going to be an extended period before your furnace can be fixed, it will be necessary to secure a warm place to stay until the furnace is back up and running. Having your furnace well maintained is one of the best ways to ensure that you never deal with a broken furnace on a cold winter night. Berico offers maintenance programs that include a regular check and service of your furnace.

Q: How big should my furnace be?
A: Picking the right size furnace when having a new one installed can be tricky for the average homeowner. You don’t want to spend more than necessary on the purchase, but you also don’t want an undersized unit that struggles to warm the house. Your best bet is to trust Berico to analyze your situation and recommend the right unit for your situation.

Q: How can I save money while running my furnace?
A: The obvious answer here is to ask the furnace to do less work day after day. The warmer you set the thermostat, the more energy the furnace will need to use to reach that target temperature. Beyond just living in a colder home, you can choose to selectively heat the space by closing vents in rooms that aren’t used. That will allow the busy parts of the house to stay warmer while not wasting energy heating up spaces where no one is spending time. But you don’t want to close off more than one or two rooms because your system is set-up for the current square footage of your home. If you close off too many vents you are essentially decreasing the square footage and throwing the system out-of-balance.

Q: How long will a new furnace last?
A: As you might imagine, there is no set period of time that you can expect to get from a new furnace. However, if you have a quality piece of equipment installed by a professional team like Berico – and that equipment is then serviced properly over the years – you should expect to get well in excess of 10 years of service from that furnace. If things go well, that number could be as high as 20 years or more, although you’ll want to monitor the performance of the furnace in those later years to make sure it is still performing up to your expectations.

Why is My AC Frozen?

Dirty AC FilterIs there ice on your air conditioner? It may seem unusual, because you typically only run your AC when it is hot outside, but it is actually a common occurrence. How exactly can your outdoor unit freeze in the warm weather? There are a few different reasons your AC may have developed a layer of ice. Here’s what you need to know about why your system is frozen, how to thaw it, and when to call for AC repair in Burlington.

  1. Problem: Clogged Filters. Your AC relies on intake vents to draw air into the system in order to cool it down and disperse it. The intake vents have filters that remove dust, dirt, and other particles from the air as it is drawn in. When these filters get dirty they can become clogged, reducing or blocking the flow of air into your air conditioner. When there is insufficient air moving across the evaporator coil the refrigerant inside can get too cold and form ice.

Solution: Turn off your AC for a few hours to let the ice thaw. Replace your dirty filters with clean ones. Once there is no more visible ice on your outdoor unit, run the blower for about an hour. Then turn the AC back on and monitor your system for a while to ensure no more ice forms.

  1. Problem: Blower Failure. Mechanical issues with your AC blower can cause it to quit. When the blower isn’t working the system can’t draw in air and the refrigerant gets too cold, allowing ice to form on the outdoor unit. It essentially has the same effect as the clogged filters, but it is caused by a broken blower system instead.

Solution: Turn off your system and call an HVAC professional. Most untrained people will not know how to fix the blower for an air conditioner and trying to do so without experience or knowledge is not recommended.

  1. Problem: Blocked Refrigerant Lines. Sometimes clogs or blockages can occur in the refrigerant lines that result in a drop in pressure. Lower pressure leads to lower temperature and allows the system to freeze.

Solution: Turn off your air conditioner and call a professional. Attempting to unclog refrigerant lines is a job for someone with experience and training.

  1. Problem: Low Refrigerant. A leak in the evaporator coil can allow refrigerant to leak. When the refrigerant level is too low the pressure drops. Just like with a blocked refrigerant line, low pressure causes the temperature to drop and the unit to freeze up.

Solution: Turn off your system and call an HVAC service in Burlington. Fixing leaks and recharging refrigerant needs to be done by a trained professional. Overfilling and under-filling can cause serious problems with your air conditioner. And failing to repair the leak before recharging the refrigerant is just asking for a repeat performance.

How Duct Cleaning Can Improve Your Life

While it is easy to forget all about the air ducts in your home, these play a vital role in the operation of your HVAC system, but when the air ducts are dirty it can have a deleterious effect on the quality of air in your home and the operation of your HVAC system.  That’s why a really thorough cleaning of the ducts can quite literally improve your life.

The air ducts enable the air from your HVAC system to circulate to all of the rooms in your home and provide air of the right temperature. And although your HVAC system has filters, it is easy for dust, debris, and pollutants to build up in the ducts particularly in the return ducts, which in many systems are carrying unfiltered air.  This build up can in turn be a catalyst to create more build-up.

If you can’t remember the last time the air ducts were cleaned in your home, it is probably time to find an Eden HVAC company to help get the Air Ducts properly cleaned so that you can maintain the healthiest home environment possible.   Fortunately Berico offers duct cleaning and you won’t have to search to find just the right Eden company to handle this for you, because Berico is it.

There are numerous reasons to get your air ducts cleaned.  Here are just a few:

  • Improves the air quality in your home: The air that circulates through your home will only be as clean as the air ducts through which it travels. If the ducts are dirty over time, your ducts will contain contaminants like dust and pet dander, all of which get pulled into your HVAC system. Cleaning out your ducts will remove these contaminants and keep them from being circulated throughout the home.

  • Improves the efficiency of your HVAC system: Once debris accumulates in your ducts, it is going to impede your airflow and fill up your filter faster. This can make your HVAC system work harder and will end up costing you more to heat and cool your home. When the particulate, dust and debris is cleared out of the air ducts, the system becomes more efficient.

  • Gets rid of the bad smells: All of the fumes in your home can get sucked into the air ducts and travel to other rooms. Stale odors, food, smoke, and cleaning agents can repeatedly be circulated throughout your home and even mold and bacteria can grow in the ducts lead to the creation of a bad smell. Often the occupants of a home will become desensitized to the smell that smacks a visitor in the face when they first enter the home. You definitely don’t want to be that homeowner.  A thorough cleaning of the air ducts will help alleviate this.

  • Prolongs the life of your HVAC system: You will have less need for AC repair in Eden if you can keep your air ducts clean. You will have fewer strains on the system and less wear and tear, which helps the system keep going, without breaking down on you.

Having your air ducts cleaned can provide you with cleaner air and a more efficient HVAC system and one that will last longer.   Berico, known as one of the absolute best Eden HVAC companies is available to help you take care of the duct cleaning, inspecting and tuning up your AC or anything else you might need. When you trust the Berico team to clean out your ducts it is easier to feel comfortable and safe in your own home. Contact Berico today to set up your appointment.

How Much Does AC Repair Cost?

As the weather has gotten warmer, you will find that you’ll need to turn on your air conditioner more often and soon it will be running almost constantly. Are you confident that your AC will operate properly? You may not know until you need to use it, and then you could find yourself in need of repair. Sometimes when your air conditioner sits unused for a few months, it can get a bit rusty, metaphorically speaking and sometimes literally. A tune up and thorough cleaning may be all that is needed to have it working efficiently, but in some cases an actual repair may be required to get it functioning properly.

How much does AC repair cost? Here’s what you can expect for a wide variety of air conditioner repairs.

Average Cost of Air Conditioner Repair

According to Home Advisor, the average AC repair cost falls between $168 and $605. But it is possible that some repairs could reach into the thousands, especially if your system can’t be repaired and needs to be replaced.

Common AC Repairs and the Average Cost Range

  • Refrigerant leak detection and repair: $225 – $1,600
  • AC refrigerant recharge: $100 – $800
  • Circuit board replacement: $120 – $600
  • Replace fuses, circuit breakers or relays: $15 – $300
  • Thermostat replacement: $115 – $470
  • AC compressor repair hard start kit: $100 – $250
  • Capacitor or contactor replacement: $90 – $475
  • Home air compressor replacement: $1,350 – $2,300
  • Evaporator coil replacement cost: $650 – $1,200
  • Condensing unit fan motor replacement cost: $100 – $700

What About My HVAC Warranty?

HVAC systems are often covered by a manufacturer’s limited warranty. If your system is relatively new and still covered under the manufacturer’s limited warranty, the cost of the parts for the repair may be covered. However, labor is not typically covered by the HVAC warranty, meaning you will still pay for the cost of labor on an hourly basis.

How Can I Avoid Unexpected AC Repair Costs?

No one expects their air conditioning to break down until it happens. Then you’re stuck without AC on a hot day while you wait for a repair service to get to you. And you can expect that during a heat wave, you’re not the only one with a busted HVAC system. Emergency and after hours repairs also come with an additional fee should you call for help during the night or on the weekend.

But there is a way to avoid all the hassle. Sign up for a Comfort and Protection Service Agreement with Berico. The plan includes two tune ups per year, one for your AC and one for your heat. Regular maintenance helps your HVAC system operate more efficiently and with a decreased chance of a breakdown.  Plan members also enjoy 20% off emergency and after hour fees, diagnostic fees, and repairs among other perks.

How to Reduce Pollen in the House

Spring is a beautiful time of year. The birds are chirping, the flowers are blooming, and the grass is getting greener. But if you have allergies, the blooming flowers are not your friend. Yellow pollen blows on the breeze and settles on every surface. It even finds its way into your home.

If you or someone in your household suffers from allergies, you need to know how to reduce the amount of pollen in your house. Here are some of the best ways to manage pollen and help reduce allergy symptoms for you and your family.

  • Replace your air conditioner filters often. The filters in the intake vents of your central air conditioner are there to remove dust, pollen, and other particles from the air before it enters your HVAC system. Replacing them often will filter more pollen from the air.
  • Use high efficiency filters. Consider buying high efficiency air conditioner filters for your HVAC system. Some are even designed specifically to filter pollen from the air.
  • Take shoes and jackets off at the door. A lot of the pollen in your home comes in with you and your family when you enter your home. It helps to remove shoes and outerwear at the door to keep it contained.
  • Wash hands after getting home. Pollen settles on surfaces that are frequently touched. Have everyone wash their hands as soon as they arrive home to prevent the spread of pollen throughout the home.
  • Keep windows and doors closed. When the weather gets nice it can be tempting to open the windows and doors, but screens can’t block out pollen. Leave the windows and doors closed and use your HVAC system to keep your home feeling comfortable.
  • Don’t dry laundry on a clothesline outside. Nice weather also makes it tempting to hang your laundry on the line. But pollen will settle on your clothes and sheets while they’re blowing in the breeze and all you’ll bring it inside.
  • Dust, vacuum, and mop more frequently. Pollen that does get inside will settle on floors and surfaces, so cleaning more often will help eliminate it. If you suffer from allergies, consider wearing a mask while you clean to keep from breathing in the pollen. You can also get a HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filter in your vacuum to remove more particles, including pollen, from your home.
  • Have your ducts professionally cleaned. If you’ve never had your ducts cleaned, there could be pollen, dust, and other debris that is blowing around your home whenever your HVAC system runs. Consider hiring a duct cleaning service (such as Berico) to thoroughly clean out your ducts.
  • Get an air purification system. Air purification systems can improve your indoor air quality by removing particulates from the air, like pollen, and creating fresh air.

How to Control Humidity in the House

As the weather warms the humidity tends to increase, at least in the southeastern US. Moist, heavy air tends to make the heat feel more unbearable. It can also be harmful to your home. Consistently humid air inside your house will eventually lead to mold growth, which makes your indoor air hazardous to breathe.

The humidity in your home can be controlled by your HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) system, but only if it is working properly. If the humidity in your home does not seem to be under control, you may be in need of HVAC replacement.

Signs of Humidity in Your Home

If you notice any of the following signs, the humidity in your home is not well controlled:

  • Fogged up windows. If the inside of your windows are fogged up on a hot day, there is excess humidity in your home.
  • Condensation on metal surfaces. Moisture tends to settle on colder surfaces, such as metal pipes and fixtures.
  • Musty smell. You may notice a musty smell in your home that likely means there is mildew or mold growing somewhere.
  • Mildew or mold growth. You may see mildew or mold growing on your walls or in moist areas of your home like the bathroom.
  • Peeling wallpaper or paint. Wallpaper and paint tend to peel when there is excessive humidity in the home.
  • Basement feels damp or smells musty. Basements have a tendency to be damp because they are underground, but dripping water or wet walls and floors are not normal.

What to Do if Your Home is Humid

The first place to start is with your HVAC system. If you have central air conditioning, it should control the humidity if it is working properly and if it is the right size for your home. Have your system and your home inspected by an HVAC expert who can assess your existing air conditioner and determine whether or not it is operating efficiently and if it is properly sized. If your system is old, it may be time for an HVAC replacement.

What to Do if Your Basement is Humid

If the only humid part of your home is the basement, you may have a different problem on your hands. Start by using a dehumidifier in your basement to control the moisture. If this alone is not effective, it may help to have basement AC installed. Some basements stay cool without air conditioning, but the use of an HVAC system could be enough to control the humidity.

Already have basement AC in place? It may not be working properly if you’re still battling humidity. Have it evaluated by a professional HVAC company to ensure it is working properly. If so, you may need to explore other options such as having your basement sealed or a sump pump put in.

Get Help With Humidity Control from Berico

Does your home feel humid in the summer? Whether you have a basement or not, your home may still be negatively affected by excessive humidity. A properly working HVAC system should be able to control the humidity levels in your home, so it may just be time for a tune-up. Berico can evaluate your air conditioner and provide repair or replacement if necessary.
